Bogans ‘R’ Us

Rob’s parents came to visit us from Arkansas.  They were really good sports about experiencing all things Australia (thanks to Rob not telling them that they were eating kangaroo … I kindly warned them away from the Vegemite).  As a reward for their perseverance we thought we’d try to give them back a little taste of home while they were here …

<Enter Collie Speedway stage right>

In our search for car races I found a dirt track in Collie.  You know Collie, winner of Australia’s Tidiest town of 2006.  I knew that would ring a bell.  True to form it reminded me of any small town in the good ol’ U.S. of A.  As we approached the cinderblock entrance gate we were waved on through and joined the small throngs of team racing jackets and tee shirts.  Before we made our seats on the metal bleachers we visited the concession stand for a healthy dinner of Fanta and french fries with gravy.  We were all impressed with the “caliber” of race car and even more entertained when they ran the race the both clockwise and counter clockwise.  The only downside to our down-home evening was the late late 2 1/2 hour drive home.  I used that time to perfect the whistling sequence of Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard.
